WHERE WE HAVE COME FROM

A tribute to all those who made it possible - The information thus far has been supplied by Cynthia Heiner - i thank Cynthia for her help and ask for more help from anyone else with more information

Now as far as I can remember - 2 women Lyn and Terry were having a hit at badminton on a Tuesday in the hall at Tallebudgera in the 1960's.  I played tennis with Lyn and was having to stop playing as I was getting skin cancers - she suggested I have a hit at badminton and the rest is history.  I enjoyed it so much I asked a few friends to play - and we soon had enough players to form a club mainly getting players by word of mouth. Terry moved away from the coast and I was elected president in 1977. We averaged 40 players a year - actually had to limit numbers because of only having 4 courts.  I don't know of any other badminton club on the coast in the early years of the Ladies Club.  Some of the women then said their husbands would like to play and we then started playing on a Sunday night but really don't have any idea what year that was. The original club was the National Fitness Ladies Badminton Club which played on a Tuesday. I THINK the Sunday night one was just the Sunday Night Badminton Club as was the Wednesday night.

Tuesday Ladies day at Tallebudgera - Other members May Campbell & Pat Langdon both in their 70's have seen the Club survive many years.  It appears this Club has been going over 30 years, Ladies only, it was decided all those years ago, it would be Ladies Only as they all needed a break from their men folk!! Ha!!  So this has stuck.  In 1976 the Club had 25 ladies mixing in ages from 48 to 70's  they had lots of fun, with many outings and functions being held away from they Badminton environment.  Lots of mini tournaments held with fellow country players around the state.   The game was originally played in the old hall at Tallebudgera, which still stands, but buildings have been built beside and around it. We now play in a new hall, which unfortunately is not a patch on the old.  so much for progress.    Morning Tea use to be a ritual with the originally ladies in the old hall, arranging tea and coffee, biscuits and cake to be shared with their fellow players, of course that has all changed, you have to buy from the new Kiosk, no drinks in the hall etc. etc.  These new rules, do take a certain segment of the social get together away, which is a sad thing, and of course adds to the expense of it all.   In saying that Badminton is still one of the cheapest sports to participate in, and offers great exercise and social out let for many people over many years.   Today we have 25 members ranging in ages late 40's to the 70's, they participate in local events, and even travel overseas.  They all have lots of good fun stories.  All are healthier for the involvement in the game. A number of the members share a light lunch after their games, most weeks plus we celebrate birthdays, and recently Easter, never too old to enjoy and Easter Egg!!  Our club is for FUN FUN and more Fun!!
